How to Make a Great Americano Coffee?

This time we want to show you how to make a variety of the traditional espresso: Americano coffee. One of the most famous, but also one of the simplest and most delicious drinks.

What is an Americano?

Americano coffee is one of the many types of creations that we can make with coffee.

It originated in Italy around the time of World War II. It is said that American soldiers were not used to the strong taste of coffee drunk in Italy (a classic espresso), so Italian baristas added water. This lowered the strong and bitter taste of the coffee and made it sweeter by adding sugar.

In essence, Americano coffee is an espresso to which, after its brew, hot water is added externally.

How to make an Americano?

Brewing an Americano is relatively simple, as you may imagine. The key is in how you make the base espresso, for this reason, I recommend that you also review our guide on how to make an espresso.

Ingredients

  • 8 to 10 grams of ground coffee. If you don’t know which one to choose, take a look at our list of the best ground coffees.
  • Hot water
  • Your favorite sweetener (optional)

Recipe

To brew it in the espresso machine you only need to:

  1. Put the coffee in the measuring spoon of the machine and press it.
  2. Put the spoon in the machine.
  3. Activate the coffee maker and wait for 20 to 30 seconds.
  4. Serve the espresso in a larger cup than the one normally used. With these measures, the result will be a cup of coffee of about 30 ml – 1 fl oz.
  5. Add two parts of hot water and that’s it, if you wish you can add sugar.

The ideal ratio of this drink is one part espresso to two parts hot water. As for the sugar, it goes according to your preferences. If you want, you can sweeten it with white sugar, brown sugar, raw cane sugar, stevia, etc.

The ideal would be to make the espresso in an espresso machine, but in case you don’t have one, do not worry, there are other types of coffee makers that you can look at. For example, the Moka pot, Chemex, and even the French press.

In this case, we recommend that you add more coffee and that it ideally has a higher degree of roasting so that it is more like the espresso made in the machine. In this way, it will be almost as strong as the espresso and with a very similar flavor.

Finally, to make an Americano, after you have the base coffee, you only have to add 2 parts of hot water and sugar if desired.

So…

As we have seen, making a delicious cup of Americano coffee doesn’t have to be complicated or tedious. We can also vary the recipes depending on the craving we have at the time, and an Americano coffee will always be a great option.

So we hope that this quick and simple guide has helped you to prepare a delicious Americano coffee at home.
